English imported chairs and Charleston made versions in the Chippendale style were often purchased in sets of twelve for dining and drawing rooms in the city's finest pre-Revolutionary townhouses. The splat on this English example reflects the "Gothic" taste fashionable in Georgian England and specified by Chippendale in his Director.
