About This Product

A Gainsborough Chair with an upholstered back and a serpentine crest. Arms terminating in carved medallions. Carved cabriole legs with whorl foot. Nail trim. The original resides at Chillingham Castle. The family of Earl Grey, the tea dynasty, granted the storied castle to Sir Humphry Wakefield. With an eye trained at Christie's and Mallett, Sir Humphry has assembled an array of most distinctive antiques including this chair. Comfortable enough for an extended visit. Refined enough to enjoy pride of place in any traditional room. Circa 1765.

About This Collection

An English baronet, Sir Humphry Wakefield is a foremost authority on English antiques and architecture. A consultant to Baker's Stately Homes program since he founded it in 1980, Wakefield selects extraordinary designs from the palaces and castles of England, Ireland, Scotland and Russia for the craftsmen at Baker to recreate.  Through these pieces, the Stately Homes collection shows that true elegance and luxury are timeless, spanning centuries, cultures and lifestyles. That’s why the furniture in this collection is at ease in today's homes as it is in the estates where the originals are still used.
